Rohit (left hamstring) and Ishant (side strain) are both undergoing NCA rehabilitation, but the BCCI is yet to announce when the two will arrive in Australia.
Given the need for a 14-day quarantine, it is clear that they will miss the first warm-up game against Australia A at Drumoin Oval from 6–8 December, if they do not leave by Monday.
“He (Rohit) was never going to play the white ball series, he just wanted to see how long he needed rest,” Shastri quoted ABC Sport as saying.
“If you need to play in the Test series or any red-ball cricket, you’ll be on the flight in the next day or four. If you’re not, it’s going to be tough.”
Shastri said that the NCA medical team is currently assessing how long Rohit will break from the game.
“But things can get tricky if he is asked to wait too long, (because) then you’re talking about quarantine again, which makes him really tough for the Test series just to come in time.” Can make, ”head coach added.
In an interview to PTI, Rohit said that he is confident to play the Test series, although some strength and conditioning work still needs to be done as far as his hamstrings are concerned.
Shastri said that Ishant’s case is similar and he would need to play at least one practice match before playing in the Test.
The second and final warm-up game at the SCG from 11–13 December will be a day before the start of the first Test to be held in Adelaide from 17 December.
Shastri said, “This (Ishant’s) is a similar case for Rohit.”
“You don’t really know how soon he will be available to fly. As I said, if someone has to play in the Test series, he has to be on the flight for the next four or five days. Otherwise, it’s not. very difficult.”
Skipping skipper Virat Kohli As the motivator of this Indian team, Shastri supported his decision to return for the birth of his first child.
“I think this is the right decision he is taking,” Shastri said.
“These moments don’t come again and again. He has the opportunity, he’s going back, and I think he’ll be happy for it.
“If you look at where India has been in the last five-six years, there is no doubt in one’s mind that it is the driving force and the man behind it (India’s success).
“So he will be clearly missed. But as I say, there comes an opportunity in adversity. There are a lot of youth on the side and this is an opportunity for him.”
